Paperclip

The paperclip - because organisation is inconceivable without purpose and volition, which applies to the clutter on your desk or anything else you can think of. And the purpose and driving force of science and technology, no matter how banal or profound, should always be pursued with higher matters in mind or else the only result will inevitably be an increasing probability of chaos.

And besides, it's a good metaphor for life - some people try to straighten theirs out...but things just don't hold together.
